September 11 Remembered

It seemed like another typical morning in New York, what was not so typical about it was the friends and family members of the 2, 750 victims of the tragic 9/11 terrorist attack that was gathered in solemn remembrance of their loved ones on Ground Zero.

As the Mourners recited the honor call of the fallen, tears fell, angers swelled, as the pain was remembered.  For some, the 9 years that have passed still seemed like yesterday.  The crowd of New Yorkers that were in the area were teary eyed while holding on to American flags as a tribute to those who have lost their lives.

September 11 has become a symbol for Americans, a unifying ideology that one person from the state of Manhattan even said “We were all New Yorkers that day. “ And true enough, that one event in history galvanized a nation into action.  The campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan still continue as a testament to that resolve. On this day no one can say that they were not horrified to see the news that fateful day 9 years ago, that they could not feel but somehow be enraged with what has happened.

There were many stories of brave men and women who were trying to make a difference. The brave firefighters who went in to save as many as they can knowing that the towers might collapse at any time. The doomed flight of UE where several brave souls battled for control of the plane and were successful in not allowing it to hit its intended target: The White House. These are just a few of those stories.

9/11 and the images captured during and after the event are forever burned in the minds and hearts not only of Americans but as the world at large as well. The planes crashing into the towers, people in despair plunging to their deaths, the grey soot that enveloped everyone in ground zero after the towers collapsed.  This was all covered by the news and the world shared in America’s pain.

For the New York the loss of the twin towers has forever changed its skyline. In its place is a shrine that honors the dead, of all races, of all faiths. It reminds people of what they have lost and what they have regained in its place. If the event has left a landscape with a big void it also did it with the family and friends of the departed.

They took husbands and Wives, Sons and Daughters, Mothers and Fathers, Lovers and Friends, A valued employee and a valued employer. And as the list of their names are called out in the shrine we remember that each name is as irreplaceable as the next one Each name, a unique individual whose existence was cut short by a cowardly act that America is ensuring won’t happen again. Even 9 years after the fact people’s hearts are still broken in places and like the cliché goes only time will tell if they can fully recover.
