Michael Douglas Diagnosed with Throat Cancer

The 65-year old award-winning actor Michael Douglas was recently diagnosed to have tumor in the throat. He revealed his health condition to the public last 3 September 2010 on The Late Show with David Letterman. He disclosed he has stage four cancer of the throat.

Michael Douglas’ famous wife, the beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones, whom he has 2 children with, is said to be furious with Michael Douglas’ doctors for not having able to detect earlier her husband’s tumor. The award-winning actor is said to have undergone a series of consultations and tests earlier in the summer but the doctors did not find anything.

Michael Douglas said the cancer is only a minor slump in his successful life and he is positive that he would recover and will be back to his good health. Doctors are also positive that the actor would beat his cancer battle. They said he has 80% chance of making full recovery.

The actor is now undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy that will last for eight weeks. He is being accompanied by his 12-year old son with Catherine Zeta-Jones, who in her part, could not bear to see his husband undergo such treatment. The couple agreed to take their children during the actor’s treatment so they could better understand cancer and be able to make the right choices in their lives.

The actor is said to have a walnut size swelling at the bottom of his tongue. Throat cancer affects the vocal cords, voice box or larynx and other areas of the throat. It is often caused by excessive tobacco and alcohol use. The most common symptoms are hoarseness of voice and sore throat that do not resolve in 1 to 2 weeks even with the use of antibiotics, neck pain, difficulty swallowing, swelling in the neck, involuntary weight loss, unexplained cough, coughing up blood and abnormal high-pitched breathing sounds. When such conditions are present, it is always best to consult the doctor for early detection and treatment of tumor in the throat.
