Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen UFC 117 – Anything Can Happen In MMA

The number one pound for pound MMA fighter Anderson “The Spider” Silva fought the middle weight division’s number one contender Chael Sonnen in UFC 117. Before this fight, Anderson Silva was known to be unbeatable and seemed to be invincible to almost all of the fighters he have fought. But this Saturday evening August 8, 2010, Chael Sonnen proved everyone wrong. He beat the crap out of Anderson and almost won against the “invincible” Silva.

Chael Sonnen trash talked in every possible way he could in all of his pre fight interviews saying Anderson Silva is a fraud, nobody cares about Anderson, a fighter who never fights, he will retire Anderson etc etc which actually made the match very interesting for the fans. These made the fans want to see how Anderson would react in the octagon and if Sonnen could really prove and do all of the things that he said.

“I’ve stuck my finger in this guy’s chest for 3 and a half years and he’s fought everyone in the world that isn’t named Chael Sonnen. I can’t tell you what a nuisance he is. This isn’t like some exciting thing to get to fight him, it’s just truly an annoyance, and I’m looking forward to it being over with just so I can move on and be done with the jerk.”

“He talked about retiring and nobody cared. He talked about going heavyweight and nobody cared.  Now he talks about going to 205, and nobody cares! I did an autograph signing with Anderson Silva, there was a line around the building to get to my room. You could have heard a rat piss on cotton in his room! Nobody was in there. Nobody cares about Anderson Silva. It’s the hardest sell in the world. Nobody shows up to see him. If BJ Penn wasn’t on that card that building’s empty Saturday night.” -Chael Sonnen

Last night August 8, 2010 12:22AM ET, the trash talking ended and the fight began. Early in the first round, Anderson and Chael had few stand up exchanges that made the crowd cheer for the champion because of his undeniable striking advantage over Sonnen. But out of nowhere, Sonnen suddenly delivered a huge punch that hurt and wobbled Anderson. The champion appeared hurt and it has been followed up with number of punches. Sonnen took the opportunity to take him down and pounded Anderson Silva on the ground up to the end of the first round. Many ware shocked on how successful Sonnen was in the first round. Silva, after that round wasn’t that invincible after all. The whole remaining rounds were pretty much the same story as the first round – Chael taking Anderson down, controlling him and pounding him on the ground. Chael Sonnen was relentless on his attacks which made the champion looked frustrated and tired. But with less than 2 minutes remaining in the last round, when everybody thought that Chael would defeat Anderson and pull up a huge upset, Anderson “The Spider” Silva locked in a jaw dropping desperation move by sinking in a triangle choke and forced the challenger Chael Sonnen to tap.

One of the greatest and the most dramatic come from behind victories of the sport. Before the fight, everyone’s counting out Chael Sonnen for not so many believed he can beat or hurt Anderson and during the fight, many believed that it’s the end of the reign of Silva and that Sonnen will be crowned as the new champ. But in the end, it never turned out the way people expected it. This fight will be talked about for a very long time for sure. The fight had showed the vulnerability of the “unbeatable”. The fight that showed the world that, in the sport of MMA, nothing is certain, anything can happen that you can never count anybody out.
