That’s Why There’s MEN in Menopause!

The menopause stage would give you a sudden thought of an older woman who’s running along ages 50’s and up, yet it would be a surprise to know that it would also apply to you when you reach that same age—yes, to you man!

Hormones are not just a girl thing. It applies to everybody. And to correct the all-time thought and belief that it’s only women who suffer the menopausal stage, here’s more to men getting menopaused.

Although the medical industry has been attending to women’s needs on their cycles, there are debates of whether the male community is going through the phase as well. More and more lings male patients are seeking for hormone therapy and it seems like it relieves them from feelings somewhat associated with this so-called stage. Doctors now have labelled this predicament as “late-onset hypogonadism”, that is, declining androgen, or testosterone in men reaching their prime years, and it could go with illnesses such as diabetes. However, healthy men unlike how women experience sexual changes, is still able to produce sperms up even passed their 80s.

Diagnosing this menopause in men is done through physical exam, this will also examine whether there are other contributory problems that may affect the condition. Blood test, such as blood testosterone level check will be performed. In the event that the levels turn out to be low, replacement therapy is offered. This remedies the common symptoms of sexual interest loss, fatigue and even depression. But take note that it’s not always healthy to take it. There are risks and even side effects that the therapy is not limited to, for those with prostate cancer, taking this therapy may just worsen the situation.

Unlike women, biological changes take place very slowly, yet similar to the opposite sex, there are obvious changes in the physical self: attitudes, moods, agility, sex drive, energy loss and fatigue are the most common of these symptoms. Aside from diabetes and cancer, which were earlier mentioned, research studies have identified that testosterone decline in men can place men in heart disease and weak bones health risks.

Menopause in men is really not predefined. As women is expected to undergo this stage in a set of years of their lives, men goes through this in extended manner—not just between their 40 or 50s-60s, but it could go along all their senior years. At what age or what time of their lives, men just could not be predicted of it!

Other symptoms that are being observed with this transition include loss of muscle mass, erectile dysfunction, nervousness, sleep disturbance or changed sleep habits, memory loss, hot flashes, worthless feelings and even cognition problems.

Going through this phase should really not become something threatening or shameful. It’s a mere parallel transition with women coming of age, prime years.  It may not be the term ‘menopause’ that would be appropriate to call this midlife crisis that men goes through, yet it’s still the same concept and changes that is naturally being felt and experienced. It’s just a matter of proper handling and care of our health.

One Response to That’s Why There’s MEN in Menopause!

  1. Since the risks of hormone replacement therapy were shown in 2002 during a study conducted by the Women’s Health Initiative, this left a huge void for treating the signs of menopause. Do you know what other forms of treatment are available other than dubious “home remedies”? Any help would be appreciated.
