Modern Family, Mad Men are the Big Winners of the 62nd Primetime Emmys

Garnering 3 awards and winning 3 years in a row, Modern Family and Mad Men, respectively, are last night’s big winners of the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards.

Modern Family, ABC’s hit mockumentary about several families in L.A., won 3 awards including best comedy series, outstanding supporting actor for Eric Stonestreet and outstanding writer for Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd. Stonestreet said he just wanted to be a circus clown while he was growing up. He will send the award to his parents in Kansas City.

AMC’s Mad Men, a series set in the 1960s about a creative director in an advertising agency, is on fire as it won its third consecutive Emmy for outstanding drama series and another win for outstanding writing for the episode Shut the Door, Have a Seat with writer and creator Matthew Weiner and Erin Levy. Weiner got cut off in his speech but was able to joke about it when he returned onstage to receive the second award.

The leader in this year’s Emmy nominations, Glee, also won 2 awards including outstanding supporting actress for Jamie Lynch and outstanding director for Ryan Murphy. Lynch commended the cast members and Murphy thanked his teachers who taught him to sing and fingerpaint. Glee was nominated in 19 categories.

HBO got the most awards among all the networks with 8 Emmys in the genre of longform programs for made for TV movie Temple Grandin, miniseries The Pacific, John Adams and Recount. However, Time Warner Inc.’s network did not win the outstanding drama series this year as it went to AMC’s Mad Men as previously mentioned. A total of 26 statuettes backed once again HBO’s claim as the source of high-end TV shows.

The outstanding lead actors of the 2010 Emmy Awards are Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory in the comedy series, Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad in the drama series, and Al Pacino for You Don’t Know Jack in the miniseries/movie series. For outstanding lead actresses, the winners are Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie in the comedy series, Kyra Sedgwick for The Closer in the drama series, and Claire Danes for Temple Grandin in the miniseries/movie series.

George Clooney was specially awarded the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his contributions to charitable and fund-raising efforts to help victims of tragedies in the U.S. and around the world including Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti earthquake disaster. He encouraged others to “help find a way to keep the spotlight burning on these heart-breaking situations that continue to be heartbreaking long after the cameras go away.”

The show was hosted by Jimmy Fallon, who performed a spectacular introduction with Tina Fey, Kate Gosselin, John Hamm, Betty White and several members Glee cast . The 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards was held on August 29, 2010 from Nokia Theatre in downtown L.A.
