Eclipse: Movie Review
Last June 30, 2010, the world was shaken again, not by earthquake but by the screams of the Twilight Saga fans. Eclipse, the third installment of the series was opened in cinemas on the said date. A continuation of Twilight and New Moon, this $200 million movie became a blockbuster hit. All praises were thrown to Director David Slade and Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg for a job well done.
The story revolved around Victoria’s undying desire, played by newcomer Bryce Dallas Howard, to avenge the death of her vampire boyfriend in Twilight. She was not successful in New Moon. So here in Eclipse, she created a new born army of vampires with the help of another newbie, Xavier Samuel as Riley in her yearning for Bella’s death and to wipe out the family of Cullen’s.
However, Bella’s vampire sweetheart, Edward, played by handsome Robert Pattinson and her werewolf best friend, Jacob, portrayed by hunky Taylor Lautner, will never let Victoria get near her. So in dire effort to protect her, though it may seem awkward for vampires and werewolves to be together, they joined forces to fight the clan of the newly bred vampires. They eventually became successful but this team up ignited even more so the rivalry between Edward and Jacob in winning Bella’s heart, played by Kristen Stewart.
Bella also did not have a choice but to hang out with Jacob. She was grounded because of her previous adventures in New Moon, when she went to Italy to save Edward from dying in the hands of Volturi. The only way she will not be grounded according to her dad, Charlie, was if she spends some time with other people, particularly Jacob.
Although, this movie was more action-packed because of the vampire-werewolf fighting scenes, a lot of funny moments arising from Edward’s jealousy are quite noticeable. Who can forget the famous dialogue by Edward: “Why can’t you put a shirt on?” when Jacob was bare-chested in his truck. Another funny moment was when the two guys shove each other after the incident, when Jacob kissed Bella without her permission. She broke her hand after spanking Jacob’s face, so Edward became very upset. Good thing, Charlie was there to calm the two guys down.
The most unforgettable would be the tent scene on the top of the mountain. Bella was freezing so Edward did not have a choice but to let Jacob warm her in his arms. This part was the funniest because these two guys did not stop arguing about who is the better guy for Bella.
The movie also showed some romance between Edward and Bella when they tried to make love in Edward’s bedroom. Funny but Edward refused to do the thing with Bella because he was a gentleman. Even as a vampire, he is conventional, not yet in a hurry for those things. He politely asked Bella’s hand in marriage and she eventually agreed. The confusing part though was when after Jacob heard that they are getting married, Bella ran after him and kissed him. If she is marrying Edward, why is she kissing Jacob?
There is a lot more to say about the movie but one thing noticeable also was the revelation of identity of the other characters from the Cullen Family. Rosalie’s history was shown as well as Jasper’s. Even though Rosalie is not pro Bella, she warned her that her longing to become one of them is wrong. We will see in the next series – the Breaking Dawn – if Bella will be tainted by Rosalie’s warning or Jacob’s advice.
